The MTP full form in Medical is Medical Termination of Pregnancy. MTP is a non-invasive process in which the pregnancy is terminated using abortion pills. It is a painless treatment and does not require any hospital stay for the patient. The MTP was introduced between 1970 to 1980 and is done by consuming one or two medicines. Mifepristone and Misoprostol are two medicines that are prescribed to avoid MTP. Additionally, the doctor also prescribes antibiotics to accelerate the recovery of the patients.

What is Abortion?

Abortion is the voluntary method conducted to terminate any unwanted pregnancy. Unlike miscarriage, it is done either with medication or surgically. The doctor prescribes MTP medication to the patient to terminate the pregnancy. Surgical methods like vacuum aspiration are another way of doing an abortion. Abortion is one of the major ways that is done if the woman does not want a baby.

When is MTP Not Conducive?

Patients should avoid MTP if they are battling any of the following conditions.

• If the pregnancy is more than nine weeks then MTP is not conducive
• If the patient is suffering from an intrauterine device (IUD)
• The patient is suffering from medical disorders that do not let abortion happen
• The patient is suffering from any bleeding issues or is they on a blood thinner
• The patient is suffering from any cardiovascular or blood vessel issues
• The patient is anaemic or has suffered ovarian mass before
• MTP is not conducive to patients who are sensitive or allergic to some kinds of drug

Complete Process of MTP

MTP is a non-invasive process that is conducted under the supervision of a gynaecologist. In this process, the patient has to undergo a medication process. The doctor prescribes an oral pill named Mifepristone. After this, another pill named misoprostol is given to you in the next 36 to 72 hours. This can be either taken orally or inserted into the vagina. Mifepristone blocks the growth of progesterone in the uterine lining and breaks it down thus terminating the pregnancy initially. Whereas, misoprostol causes contractions and expels the fetus. This process is followed by heavy vaginal bleeding for the next two weeks. Once the process is completed, the patient has to do a follow-up medical examination to avoid any medical complications.

Advantages of MTP

The following are the advantages related to the MTP procedure:

• MTP is an efficient and secure option for early pregnancies as the treatment is painless
• It does not need the patients to undergo anaesthesia, surgery, or vacuum aspiration
• Owing to its effectiveness, MTP is recommended for patients who are not conducive to stress or emotional outbursts

Drawbacks of MTP

Here are the major drawbacks that patients can experience with MTP:

• The patient can experience excessive bleeding after terminating the pregnancy
• Patients can also experience common symptoms like vomiting, nausea fever, and chills
• The patient can experience inflammation or infection in their pelvic area for some days
• Blood clots in the uterus are expected in some cases and the cervix can also be ripped in some cases

Recovery Period After MTP

The medical termination of pregnancy is a time taking process and the body takes time to recover. One of the major factors that decide the overall recovery period is the patient’s overall immunity and metabolism. Apart from this, the stage of pregnancy in which the termination is done is also a crucial factor that decides the recovery period. In general, the patient may experience internal bleeding only for a week. Common side effects like severe back or stomach discomfort, cramping, fever, and foul-smelling vaginal discharge are expected for a longer period. Technically, a patient can take longer than one month to commence his daily routine.
