What Is HIV/AIDS?

HIV or AIDS is a blood-borne virus that gets transmitted to one via retroviruses HIV-1 or HIV-2. The HIV virus starts to weaken the immune function of the body by destroying CD4 T lymphocytes. The damage to these leads to a decrease in the number of immune cells that fights infection. This reduced number leads to a deficiency of WBC that in turn compromises the immunity of the patient. As for now, there is no definite cure that can eradicate the disease completely. AIDS can be diagnosed only via the blood test that is prescribed for it. The patient suffering from AIDS needs to have a CD4 count of fewer than 200 cells/mm3 whether or not they have an AIDS-defining condition.

Stages Of AIDS

There are four stages of AIDS as the disease advances in the body of the patient. Know more about the same in the section below.

Primary HIV infection.

After a person contracts an HIV infection, the symptoms start to show after two to four weeks. The first symptom that a patient gets is the flu. Due to the onset of the flu, the HIV virus replicates quickly due to a high viral load. Acute seroconversion is found in the body when the virus sets. To prevent the disease, the immune system creates an immune cell wall that causes symptoms like fever, nausea, flu, etc.

Chronic HIV

Chronic HIV is that stage wherein the symptoms are not visible. This is why chronic HIV cannot be noticed during the early stages. The best way to detect the infection is by undergoing a clinical test. This contaminates the blood and can progress into a disease.

Symptomatic HIV

Mild and persistent symptoms are caused by the virus's slow replication and immune system harm.

Advanced AIDS

Advanced AIDS is the last stage of the HIV infection and the immune system of the person is heavily compromised during this process. The complete symptoms take around 8 to 10 years to develop. This can be known by checking the viral load, CD4 level, and presence of opportunistic diseases.

How Does AIDS Spread?

AIDS is a sexually transmitted disease that spreads if the patient comes in contact with contaminated blood or semen. However, there are other ways as well via which HIV AIDS can transmit from one person to another. The following are the condition that causes AIDS to transmit from person to person.

  1. Sexual Transmission is the most common mode of HIV transmission through sexual contact. Any unprotected intercourse or the use of faulty or damaged contraceptives can lead to the virus entering the body.
  1. Blood-to-Blood Transmission is another reason for HIV transmission. This is mainly due to using or sharing contaminated needles or other drug injection equipment. Using unsterilized instruments for procedures like tattooing, piercing, or medical interventions.
  2. Mother-to-Child Transmission happens if the mother is infected with the virus. HIV can be transmitted from an infected mother to her child during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding. However, with appropriate medical interventions, such as antiretroviral therapy (ART) and prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) protocols, the risk can be significantly reduced.
  3. HIV transmission can also occur through other means by sharing personal items like infected blood, like razors or toothbrushes.

Treatment Of AIDS

No prescribed treatment for AIDS is able to treat the disease completely. However, doctors prescribe medications that slow down the progress of the HIV virus in the body. Apart from this, there are several cures and therapy that can help to prevent the progression of the disease. Know more about the treatment of AIDS. The doctors offer ART (antiretroviral therapy) to prevent the progression of the disease in the body. These medications help to avoid or slow down the replication of the virus. Proper support and clinical counselling also work by providing adequate care for a happy and lively life.

Prevention Of AIDS

One of the best ways to avoid infection of aids is by resorting to prevention strategies. There are a range of preventive steps that one can resort to to prevent infection.

  • Using contraceptives during sexual activities helps to prevent and reduce HIV transmission
  • Always use sterile injection whenever taking drugs. Using shared needles or injections is one of the leading causes of AIDS transmission
  • STI (Sexually Transmitted Infections) is another risk of getting AIDS infection. It is advised to go for regular tests and checkups to reduce the risk of HIV infection
  • Limiting the number of sexual partners is another way to reduce the risk of HIV transmission.
  • Knowing your HIV status allows you to take steps to protect yourself and your partners from HIV transmission
