SGOT Full Form

The SGOT full form is Serum Glutamic Oxaloacetic Transaminase. This test is also known as AST, which stands for aspartate aminotransferase. This enzyme is found majorly in tissues of different organs like the liver, heart, kidneys, skeletal muscles, and bones as well. The SGOT is mainly produced by the liver but other organs like the heart, brain, kidney, and muscles also produce in small quantity.

The SGOT is mainly found in the blood and usually, the levels are very low in a male’s bloodstream. As per reports, the standard blood SGOT level is approximately 5 to 40 units per litre of serum. However, whenever, the body experiences any kind of abnormality then the body produces SGOT at very high levels. These abnormally high levels suggest that there is some abnormality in the blood level.

The SGOT full form is Serum Glutamic Oxaloacetic Transaminase. This test is performed to determine the complete liver profile of a patient. With this test, the doctor can detect the levels of serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase. The higher levels of SGOT in the bloodstream are considered dangerous for any human being. An SGOT (or AST) test determines how much liver enzyme is present in the blood.

SGOT test is prescribed by the doctor for those patients who are showing symptoms of liver abnormalities or liver failure. How Can One Prepare for the SGOT Test?

An SGOT test is a simple blood test that is done to test if the patient is suffering from any liver abnormalities or liver failure. Here are some of the ways in which one can effectively prepare for the SGOT test:
  • Ensure that you do not take any OTC drugs at least two days before the test. The major drug that should be avoided before the test is acetaminophen (Tylenol).
  • It is advised to stay hydrated the night before the examination. The technician draws blood from the nerves hence it is advised to drink an ample amount of fluid. Having ample fluid in the body can reduce the risk of bruising or redness during the test
  • Also, try to wear loose garments and clothes during the test. This helps you to keep cool and comfortable and enables you to relax after the test is completed

What Can One Deduce with SGOT Result?

The SGOT test is usually prescribed to detect any liver abnormality faced by the patient. To know about the same, a technician conducts a blood test on the patient. Next, the blood is tested with other chemicals to get an insight into the liver function. Generally, the SGOT test deducts the level of AST in the blood level. Males have usually high AST levels in their blood. A score of more than 50 for males and 45 for women is considered high and indicate any abnormality.
