About food

We all eat chapatti (roti) and rice; bread and butter; fruits, vegetables and pulses; vegetable oil (cooking oil), butter and desi ghee. Some of us also eat eggs, meat, chicken and fish. And all of us drink milk. These are some of the examples of food.  We eat many different kinds of food at different times and on different days. This is called variety in food. Different people eat different type of food according to their habits, life style, taste and availability.

INTRODUCTION

Every organism needs energy to perform its various life activities. Like a car needs fuel for running, living organisms also require a fuel which can provide them energy. The fuel which living organisms use for getting energy is called FOOD. The chemical substances in food that our body needs are called Nutrients. 

FUNCTIONS OF FOOD 

1.All living organism require energy to do work. 

2.They get this energy from the food they eat. 

3.All the useful elements present in food such as Carbohydrates, fats proteins, minerals, water and vitamins which are essential for maintaining the life process in human beings, are called nutrients. 

Example -1  What are nutrients?

Solution-Food contains many chemical substances required by our body such as carbohydrates, fat protein, minerals and vitamins. These are called nutrients.

Example -2 Do all living beings eat same type of food? 

Solution-No all living beings eat different types of foods.
