Introduction
Representation of Decimals on A number Line
Suppose we want to locate 0.7 and 1.3 on number line then, we can locate 0.7 between 0 and 1 and 1.3 can be located between 1 and 2.
Conversion of fractions to decimals
1. When fractions are decimal fractions (whose denominators are 10, 100, 1000 etc)
Step 1 : Count the number of zeroes in the denominator.
Step 2: Place the decimal point in the numerator such that the number of digits on right of decimal point is equal to the number of zeroes in denominator.
Note: Place zero on right side of the number, if the number of digits in numerators is less than the number of zeroes in the denominator.
2. When fractions are not 10, 100, 1000 etc.
Step 1: Convert the fractions into equivalent fractions with denominator 10, 100, 1000 and then changes them into a decimals.
OR
Divide the numerator by the denominator and write the quotient in decimal form.
Addition and Subtraction of Decimal Numbers
The steps used for adding/subtracting the decimal numbers
Steps 1: Convert the given decimal into like decimals.
Steps 2 : Write the decimals in columns keeping the decimal point of each decimal in the same column. Thus, the tenths will come below tenths, hundredths below hundredths and so on.
Steps 3: Add/Subtract in the same way as we add whole numbers.
Step 4 : Put the decimal point in the answer obtained in step 3, directly below the other decimal points
