Selecting the easiest division method depends upon the numbers involved. Following are some points which may help to choose the appropriate method.
Begin by inspecting the numbers to see if either simple division or proportionate divisions can be used.
If the divisor is close to a power of 10 and less than that base then try “All from 9 and last from 10”. It is the easiest when the first digit of the dividend is small.
If the divisor is close to a power of 10 but more than the base then try “Transpose and adjust”. Again it is often easiest when the first digit of the dividend is small.
If all else fails then use straight division, as this is the general method applicable in all cases. Altered remainders or vinculum digits can often make the working easier.
