Question
Find the length of a chord of a circle which is at a distance of 6 cm from the centre of the circle. The radius of the circle is 10 cm.
Solution
Sol. AB is a chord of the circle whose distance from the centreO is 6cm. Draw OM⊥AB. Then M is mid-point of AB and AM = BM =

Now, in right angledΔOMA, we have
OA = 10 cm and OM = 6cm
By Pythagoras Theorem, we have
⇒
=
= 100 – 36 = 64

8 cm
⇒ AB = (2 × 8) cm = 16 cm
Hence, length of the chord AB is 16 cm
