Solutions: to worksheet-12 Topic- Pollution of Air and Water

  1. Sulphur dioxide gas
  2. Water pollution
  3. (b) Stratosphere
  4. (a) Global warming
  5. (b) 78.09%
  6. The different ways in which water gets contaminated are:
    1. Adding of domestic and industrial wastes in different water bodies without treating them.
    2. Organic pollutants lead to bacterial growth which reduces the oxygen levels of water.
    3. Also synthetic detergents, acids, alkalis and a variety of soluble salts are added to water increasing contamination.
  7. At individual level, air pollution can be reduced by
    1. Afforestation
    2. Using cleaner fuels
    3. Car pooling
    4. Creating public awareness
  8. Green house effect:
  9. A part of the radiation that falls on the earth is absorbed by it and a part is reflected back into space. A part of the reflected radiations is trapped by the atmosphere. This trapped radiation further warms the earth. This is called Green house effect. Gases like CO2, CH4, and NO2 etc. trap the heat and are therefore called as Green House Gases.
  10. Due to deforestation and air pollution the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere is increasing rapidly. CO2 is a major green house gas which traps heat and does not allow it to escape into space. As a result, the average temperature of the earth’s atmosphere is gradually increasing. This is called Global warming.
    • Due to global warming, the glaciers are melting and sea levels are rising schematically
    • Global warming is results in wide ranging effects on rainfall patterns, agriculture, forests, plants and animals.
  11. The increased level of pollutants in the water effect her survival of aquatic organisms due to organic pollutants lead to bacterial growth which reduces the amount of oxygen dissolved in water and this in turn kills the fish and destroys the aquatic life.
