Solutions: to worksheet-5 Topic- Sources of Energy
1. Fuel
2. Electric
3. Carbon dioxide
4. Uranium
5. Solar
6. Charcoal
7. Kakrapar, Tarapur
8. Fossil fuelsare fuelsformed by natural processes such as anaerobic decompositionof buried dead organisms. The age of the organisms and their resulting fossil fuels is typically millions of years, and sometimes exceeds 650 million years. [1]Fossil fuels contain high percentages of=carbonand include coal,petroleum, and natural gas.
9. Renewable energyisenergythat comes from resources which are continually replenished, that is, resources that are not likely to be exhausted by human consumption such as wind, sunlight and water. Soil, groundwater, forests and living organisms are exhaustible resources, which are replenished naturally after their consumption They produce little or no pollution or greenhouse gases, and they will never run out.
10. Non-renewable energy comes from fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas, uranium):
(i) They are non-renewable and fast depleting;
(ii) They emit carbon dioxide when burnt, adding to the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and pushing us faster towards global warming;
(iii) They leave behind harmful by-products upon combustion, thereby causing a lot of pollution;
(iv) Mining of such fuels leads to irreversible damage to the adjoining environment;
(v) Fossil fuels pollute the environment
(vi) They will eventually run out.
(vii) Prices for fossil fuels are rising, especially if the real cost of their carbon is included.
11. (i) Reduce the use of conventional fuels.
(ii) Use renewable sources of energy like wind, solar energy, hydroenergy, geothermal energy, and biomass energy.
(iii) Use more fuel-efficient machines and electrical appliances.
(iv) Conserve energy
12. (i) Greenhouse gas: Greenhouse gas emissions, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrous oxide and methane from automobile exhausts and industries, trap heat in the atmosphere.
(ii) Deforestation:Extensive logging is removing trees and plants that would otherwise absorb CO2.
(iii) Oceans' absorption of CO2:Oceans help maintain a delicate equilibrium by absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere and reflecting heat from the sun. But this balance is difficult to match with global CO2 emission levels.
(iv) Loss of sea ice:Glaciers help maintain the temperature of oceans, but with ice melting, there is less heat that is reflected back and more water to absorb it.
13. (i) Increasing population
(ii) Excessive use of non-renewable sources of energy.
(iii) Use of less fuel-efficient machines.
(iv) Affluent life-style of the people.
