An Introduction to Motion

  1. A body is in a state of rest when it doesn't change its position with respect to time.
  2. A body is called to be in motion when it changes its position with respect to time.

Types of Motion

  1. When a body is moving in a straight line direction, it is referred to as rectilinear motion. E.g. : a coin falling from a building, or a sprinter running a 100 metre race.
  2. When an object is following a circular path of motion, it is referred to as as circular motion. E.g. the moon revolving across the earth.
  3. When an object moves to and fro from a mean or steady position or repeats the motion, it is referred to as as periodic motion. E.g. : a pendulum, or a race car taking laps of a circuit.

Measurement of Distances

  1. Distance is the measure of how far or lengthy something is. E.g.: the length of a table, or a football field or, how far is Mumbai from Delhi?
  2. Length may be measured in terms of a unit. A unit is a comparison of an unknown quantity with that of a known quantity. It is needed to set up a common standard or convention in order to make calculations and evaluation simpler worldwide.

Solved Questions

Q1. What do you understand by the term ‘motion’?

Ans. When an object is moving it is said to be in motion. It is always with respect to another object.

Q2. Ravi and his friend Manish live 3000 m away from each other. Express the distance between their houses in kilometres (km)?

Ans. We know that 1000 m = 1 km Therefore, 3000 m = 3 km

Therefore, the distance between the two houses is 3 km

Q3. Define the following:

  1. Odometer
  2. Estimation

Ans. Odometer: An odometer is a device used for indicating distance travelled by an automobile or other vehicle. It may be electronic or mechanical

Estimation: The ‘idea of how much’ is called estimation. It will be useful for us if we learn how to estimate time, volume, temperature etc.

Q4. Mention some precautions that one should take while measuring the length using a ruler?

Ans. The distance of something from one end to other is called length. It can be measured using a ruler a measuring tape, meter rod and so on which is convenient for the required purpose.

While measuring length using a ruler, we should take the following precaution

  1. Care should be taken to keep the ruler along the length of the object.
  2. If the edge of the ruler is worn out or broken the measurement should be started from any other mark that is fully clear for ex. If we measure from 2cm mark to the 7 cm mark the length is 5 cm (7 cm – 2 cm = 5 cm)
  3. Eyes should be exactly above the point where the measurement is to be taken. If our eyes are at different position, we might get wrong readings.

Q5. What is the importance of estimation in our daily life? Explain.

Ans. Sometimes we notice that when our mother cooks a meal she does not measure every ingredient she puts in. She has a rough idea of ‘how much’ of each ingredient she needs to use.

This idea of how much’ is called ‘estimation’. It will be useful for us if we learn how to estimate time, volume, temperature etc. Estimation skill is very useful throughout our life.
