The North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST) is an auniqueInstituteinthe country having unconventional and innovative academic programs. It was established in the year 1983 by the Government of India; Its foundation stone was laid by the former President of India, Late GyaniZail Singh, on March 4, 1984.

The Institute was initially set up as a project of the North Eastern Council(NEC) to provide a system of education to create technical manpower at various levels for the development of the country's North Eastern Region. Its approach is to encourage vocational education policy at the 10+2 level and to allow motivated students to move up to a professional degree.

A Brief Background of NERIST

In contrast, others leave the Institute to enrich their profession with industrial experience. It has been autonomous and fully funded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Govt. of India, since April 1, 1994. It became a UNIVERSITY on May 31, 2005, under section 3 of the UGC Act 1956. It is governed by the Board of Management (BoM) comprising representatives of the MHRD, Govt. of India, the eight beneficiary states of North East India, AICTE, and eminent educationists.

It is residential and is spread over513 acres of land. Academic programs in the Institute started in august 1986, with the first batch of students admitted to theBase Module. Till July 2018, twenty-seven students in Agricultural Engineering, Civil Engineering, ComputerScience and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Forestry have graduated.

Many have been placed in reputed organizations at national and international levels. Full-fledged PGand Ph.D.programmes started in 2007. The NERIST Entrance Examination (NEE) is conducted by the North Eastern Regional Institute of Science And Technology (NERIST) for admissions to various B.Tech programs offered by NERIST. The entrance examination is conducted at different centers in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura.

NERIST conducts the exam in three levels- NEE-I, NEE-II, and NEE-III for different modules, i.e., Base (Certificate), Diploma and Degree modules of Technology Stream, and four years Degree in Forestry.
