Pisciculture is the culturing of selected types of fish under controlled conditions of breeding.

Most abundant and easiest source of protein in India even for poor people, highly nutritious and easily digestible.

India has vast water resources of sea, rivers, lakes, ponds and marshes. Pisciculture, the rearing of fishes for commercial production include management of water bodies, feeds, raising and the introduction of seedlings.

The various steps taking place during fish farming are as follows :

Breeding : It is the first step in pisciculture. It is of two types on the mode of breeding :

  • Natural breeding : In this, fishes are allowed to breed naturally in natural conditions and the eggs are collected manually.
  • Induced breeding : Eggs, obtained from natural breeding, are a mixture of eggs of various types. While induced or artificial methods of breeding are used to obtain desirable eggs. In this, ova from the desired female and sperms from the desired male, are obtained by artificial mechanical processes and the ova are get fertilized by the sperms and then fertilized eggs are collected.
