Hormone Gene Therapy
Technology for Medical Applications of Class 12
Hormone Therapy
Hormone - blocking and hormone - supplementing therapies have been used to treat diseases involving hormonal deficiencies or imbalances.
Estrogen replacement therapy is used for treatment of complications of menopause. Progestin is taken along with estrogen in this therapy. But in patients where the uterus has been surgically removed, may be given only estrogen.
Gene Therapy
Method of correcting genetic defects by introducing normal functional gene in the cells that contain the defective allele of the gene.
The gene is inserted into a specifically made vector, which is then introduced into somatic cells as a protein - DNA complex or as naked DNA.
The introduced functional gene may either be added to the defective gene or replace it.
Diseases like Severe Combined Immuno Deficiency (SCID), thalassemia, haemophilia, enzyme deficiency diseases with variable degrees of success can be corrected.
