Orthoboric acid contains triangular BO33- units. In the solid, the B(OH)3 units are hydrogen bonded together into two−dimensional sheets with almost hexagonal symmetry. The layers are quite a large distance apart and thus the crystal breaks quite easily into very fine particles.
