Types of Reproduction
Two Types Reproduction
a) Asexual Reproduction
It occurs by fragmentation, external budding, gemmules and reduction bodies.
Any broken part ( = fragment) of sponge is capable to grow into complete sponge.
It is of external and internal (gemmule formation) type.
In external budding, a bud develops from parent body which either detaches itself from parent body or gets settled to form a new sponge or remain permanently attached to grow into a colony. Check out Biology Doubts section of Physics Wallah to find more Questions related to Biology.
In internal budding, gemmule formation occurs (during unfavorable conditions). Each gemmule has the mass of archaeocytes surrounded by two protective covering with a number of spicules in between to tide over seasonal drought or adverse environmental conditions. On return of favourable conditions, mass of archaeocytes comes out via micropyle (minute pore) and grows into a sponge.
Thus, gemmule is a means of dispersal as well as reproduction
